Fresh Guacamole in 5 Minutes

Guacamole is probably the fastest and most nutritious comfort food. There’s nothing like a dollop of fresh guac on top of a burrito bowl! It’s perfect with chips, nachos, tacos, avocado toast, burritos and burrito bowls, quesadillas, tacos and more. Making your own is impossibly easy and way fresher than store bought guacamole.

Is guacamole healthy?

Advertisements

Yes! This recipe is made with only fresh ingredients and no preservatives like the store bought varieties.

Avocados have many nutritional benefits including heart healthy fats, fiber, vitamin C, E, K, B6, folate, potassium, and magnesium. They’re great for your heart, eyes, skin, bones, brain, and digestive system.

In addition, the tomato, jalapeños and onion in the guacamole provide even more benefits. Tomatoes are high in vitamin C. Jalapeños and onion are great for digestive health.

How to pick a good avocado?

When you’re at the grocery store, choosing the right avocado will make or break your guacamole. You’re looking for an avocado that’s evenly textured (no bulges or “veins”). You want it firm but with some give, similar to an orange or pear texture. If it’s hard as a rock, you’ll have to wait many days before it will ripen enough to make good guacamole. If it’s too soft, it’s likely browning on the inside already.

Storage Tips

The most annoying thing about guacamole is the next day when it turns brown. The reason it turns brown is from the air exposure, so ensure that there’s no air bubbles in your container when you store it. Store in an airtight container either filled all the way to the top or lined with saran wrap touching the guacamole to prevent browning.

Guacamole Add-Ins and Variations

This recipe uses tomato, jalapeño , onion, garlic powder, onion powder, lime juice and salt & pepper. You can adjust the amounts of jalapeño and onion to your liking. You can also try fresh garlic or cilantro. Have you ever tried guacamole made with lemon juice? You may be surprised to find it doesn’t alter the flavor much, and adds a vibrant pop to the recipe similarly to lime juice.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can try adding roasted pumpkin seeds, pomegranate, bell pepper, or a bit of vegan sour cream.
